RECIPES:

Here are some great recipes from my friends!

Seed Mix Recipes:

This recipe came from Pam at http://www.scotties-n-greys.com (The breeder that Jazz came from):

GREEN CHEEK CONURE SEED MIX

6 cups Black Oil Sunflower Seeds

1 cup Safflower Seeds

1 cup PLAIN Cheerios

1 cup fortified parakeet seed

2 cups Chex Mix - mine like corn the best...

1 cup broken pretzels

1 cup of any dehydrated dried fruit

All of these ingredients can be bought at Wal-Mart Super Centers. If you have room, keep frozen. Take out as much as you will need for a few days and keep in a ziplock bag or re-closeable container.

Birdie Bread Recipes:

This recipe came from Pam at http://www.scotties-n-greys.com (The breeder that Jazz came from):

Bobbi's Birdie Bread

Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.

Dry ingredients:

2 boxes of Jiffy Corn Muffin Mix

3 tablespoons of baking powder

2 cups of dry baby cereal

Wet ingredients:

2 eggs and shells (puree in blender)

4 jars of baby food (4.5 ounce jars)

2 jars of sweet potatoes or squash or mixed veggies or carrots

1 jar of fruit

1 jar of chicken or turkey with rice or veggies or noodles.

Any of the baby food fruits and veggies can be used but check the label and

choose those with high Vitamin A content.

3/4 cup of a national brand of peanut butter

Mix wet and dry ingredients separately. Combine wet and dry ingredients. Add 1 1/2 cups of shredded or finely chopped carrots or broccoli to the mix. The mix will be heavy and stiff. Do not add liquid or it won't rise properly.

Spray a 9x13 inch pan with Pam Cooking Spray, put the dough in the pan and bake for about 30 minutes (check for doneness) in a 400 degree pre-heated oven. Cool on a rack, cut into squares and freeze in single layer in gallon size plastic baggies. Thaw covered squares of the cornbread in the microwave when ready to serve.

Mash Recipes:

These three recipes came from my friend Amanda on the Green Cheek Yahoo group:

Recipe 1:
Super-Snazzy Munchies
This recipe is recommended for larger parrots, but could potentially be made for smaller/medium species, with alterations.

1 Box Organic Whole Grain Wheat/Flax meal Pasta
1.5lbs whole nuts (almonds)
I bag of Kashi Puff Cereal
1 bag green peas
1 bag split yellow lentils
1 bag whole grain brown rice
1/2 bag organic whole barley
1.5 pounds or so of a mix of Zupreem colored pellets (conure and tiel size), Zupreem natural pellets (cockatoo size and cockatiel size), and roudybush in the small and mini size
2 Cups Multi-grain cheerios
1lb Roudybush large Pellets

I soaked and cooked up the rice, barley, peas, and lentils and then mixed everything together and froze it. I give each bird 1 Tablespoon of this twice a day. With 6 small birds, this should last me at least 3 months.

Recipe 2:
Rice Surprise
This recipe is great for all birds, large to small beaks! This is good served hot or cold, but my fids like it warm. This is also a great way to get finicky eaters to try new things!

1 Bag frozen mixed veggies
I bag Chickpeas
1/2 bag green peas
1 bag baby carrots pureed in blender/magic bullet.
1/2 crown broccoli pureed
2 jalapenos pureed
2 yams pureed
1 sweet potato pureed
1/2 pound raw almonds pureed (whoops, I forgot this when I made it!)
1/2 bag organic red leaf lettuce pureed

I put all the ingredients into a big soup pot (I used one of those tall ones you steam whole corn cobs in) and add water and cook for about an hour and 20 minutes, or until all the water cooks out and the rice is tender.

I put this into ice cube trays, froze, and then bagged 6 into small sandwich bags. Again, this made about 13-14 weeks worth of food for my flock. My birds each get this for breakfast (1 spot on the tray is about 1 Tablespoon).

Recipe 3:
Pasta Dish

1 bag cooked Brown Rice
1 bag Split Green Peas, soaked overnight and cooked
1 bag Lentils, soaked overnight and cooked
1 bag Barley, soaked overnight and cooked
1-2 boxes whole wheat pasta, cooked but not drained

Combine all of these ingredients in the big blue pot like in the above recipe.

Next, I get the veggies ready. Use whichever kind of veggies your birds like. I also add in veggies my birds don't like, but I want them to like. It gets so mixed in the end, it is hard for them to pick & choose what they wanna eat.

Veggies I used are:

Matchstick carrots
Broccoli
yellow squash
butternut squash
zucchini
1/2 green pepper
snap peas

Then I add the veggies (I used a food processor to make them nice and small) to a different, large pot (like a dutch oven) with water and let that cook for about 45 minutes until the veggies are all mushy, then I add veggies to the big pot and mix it all together. I served out a week's worth of food in a quart-sized freezer bag (for my birds, it was 2 and 5/8 cups) and this made 16 weeks worth of food. Froze all of the bags but one (for this week).

Diet:

The suggestions that I received from a local Avain friend is that a Green Cheek's diet should be 40% pellets, 40% fresh fruit, veggies, prepared meals, and 20% seed mix.

Remember to get the proper seed mix for your bird. Large parrot mixes may have pieces too big for your birds and parakeet mix may not contain adequate nutrition.
